What to inspect
Separate outer-box damage from damage to the watch and accessories. Note what you can see without operating or opening the watch. A crushed box does not establish internal damage, and an intact box does not rule it out.
A practical workflow
Photograph the packaging layers, labels, contents, and affected areas. Ask the provider whether it needs an inspection or estimate and who should arrange it. Retain the original files and a record of every notification.
When to pause or proceed
Avoid diagnosing the cause yourself if professional assessment is needed. Follow written instructions for preservation and any return shipment so an attempted fix does not complicate the investigation.
Worked example
Suppose the crystal appears cracked on arrival. Photograph it in the received condition and seek instructions before winding or wearing the watch, which could obscure what happened next.

The delivery shows the damage documented in the attached images. I have kept all packaging and have not repaired or altered the watch. Please confirm the required inspection, evidence, and claim process, including who should arrange any estimate. The notice relates to shipment [reference] and the observed damage listed here.

Agree who carries each part of the shipment risk
A shipping quote is only one part of the arrangement. Identify who buys the label, which service carries the parcel, who can submit a claim, and which terms cover the watch on that route. Carrier declared value and a separate insurance policy are different arrangements. Ask for written confirmation that watches of the relevant value are eligible; a label that accepts a large number does not by itself establish coverage.
Keep the packing record, contents list, receipt, tracking history, and delivery evidence in the same file. Link them using the shipment reference without publishing a live tracking number. At each handover, record what you actually observed rather than inferring the contents from an intact outer box. Agree in advance how a discrepancy will be reported so that the recipient is not improvising while a claim or return deadline runs.
Carrier restrictions and insurance conditions can change and may differ between domestic and international shipments. Follow the current written terms for your booking; this guide does not quote a universal insured limit.
Can I throw away the box after taking photos?
Keep it until the responsible provider confirms it is no longer needed. Photographs may not replace physical packaging in the carrier’s investigation or claim process.
